Published: 21 Jul 2026
LONDON, UK – 21st July 2026: Premium digital environments with lower ad-load significantly increase reader experience. improve brand recall, and strengthen purchase intent, according to a new study conducted by Mail Metro Media and Lumen Research, with supporting partner Havas Media Network UK.
‘Centre for Attention: The Premium Edition’, examined the impact on readers and advertisers of low-ad-load environments compared with current digital layouts. Premium test environments based on a simulated Daily Mail website featured up to five ads per page on desktop and up to three on mobile, versus up to 15 ads in current environments.
The research, featuring eight well-known brands, showed that, when tested in the premium layout, using a billboard format on desktop and a double-height sticky banner and MPU on mobile, the percentage viewed increased from 53% to 78%. The brand achieved 4.2x higher spontaneous recall, 2.2x higher attentive seconds, and an 8% lift in purchase intent compared to standard environments.
Key findings from the research also include:
· Enhanced Attention and Recall: Premium ad environments drove 1.6x higher attention and 2.4x higher spontaneous recall compared with current environments.
· Improved Mobile Performance: On mobile devices, the streamlined environment led to a 19% increase in purchase intent, a 17% increase in consideration, and a 1.9x increase in spontaneous recall.
· Better Reader Experience: Three in four respondents agreed that advertising in the premium environment did not disrupt their browsing. Premium desktop environments also delivered a 17% reduction in perceptions that pages felt busy.
· First Impressions Count: Ad attention declined further down the page by a factor of 10, highlighting the value of first-impression, first-slot, and sticky formats. Separately, higher-share-of-voice formats in premium environments delivered 3x more recall.
Samantha Eales, Head of Commercial Audience Data at Mail Metro Media, commented: "The digital advertising industry has long relied on sheer volume of impressions, often at the expense of user experience. This research shows that less means more for both readers and brands. Advertising served in trusted, engaged and premium publisher environments with fewer ads on the page create high-attention environments where brands experience an uplift in upper and lower-funnel KPIs."
Mike Follett, CEO at Lumen Research, added: "The data clearly shows that advertising effectiveness is shaped by the quality and context of the environment where it appears. When publishers reduce ad load, they create environments that encourage greater engagement and slower scrolling. This gives ads a better chance of crossing the 2.5-second cognitive threshold needed for messages to resonate, which both Daily Mail premium formats easily surpassed. More inventory does not create more impact, too many ads can dilute attention.”
Emma Withington, Chief Strategy and Planning Officer at Havas Media Network UK, said: “At the heart of this research is a call to create better experiences for readers. When content is designed around what people genuinely want and need, it fosters deeper engagement, builds trust and delivers greater value for brands. Prioritising the human experience in marketing isn't just good for audiences; it strengthens the credibility of our industry and creates more meaningful connections between brands and the people they serve.”
