Small Digital Publisher of the Year sponsored by Deloitte
SoPublishing operates in the fast-evolving local digital publishing landscape, where shifting audience behaviours and advancing technology are creating new opportunities for growth. As a small, independent publisher with annual turnover approaching £1M, SoPublishing is structured to move quickly, think clearly and act decisively.
The company’s focus for 2025–2026 has been to build on the strength of its flagship title, SoGlos, by deepening audience relationships, expanding its editorial offer and strengthening commercial performance. The opportunity is clear: to leverage a proven publishing model, proprietary technology and a deeply engaged audience to launch and operate multiple local media brands efficiently at scale. To support this ambition, SoPublishing has focused on building a scalable publishing business, with SoGlos as the foundation.
Editorially, the team have strengthened SoGlos’s position as Gloucestershire’s leading media brand, delivering high-quality, positive journalism across three core pillars – lifestyle, business and community. The launch of the Community section marked a significant step forward, broadening editorial coverage to better reflect grassroots voices and underrepresented stories, while reinforcing SoPublishing’s role in informing, championing and connecting local communities. Alongside this, the team have increased their focus on exclusive, agenda-setting content that audiences actively choose for its relevance, quality and perspective. The audience strategy is deliberately multi-platform, bringing together website, social, email and events to create a connected ecosystem that reaches audiences throughout their daily lives.
This editorial clarity is underpinned by continued investment in SoCMS, SoPublishing’s proprietary platform and operating system for scalable local media. Designed to support a portfolio of titles, it seamlessly integrates commercial operations with content creation, commissioning, campaign delivery and performance reporting within a single scalable environment.
Commercially, SoPublishing has refined a partnerships model built on long-term value and measurable outcomes. By aligning closely with audience insight and editorial environments, the team deliver campaigns that feel authentic, perform strongly and build lasting relationships. This is a disciplined, repeatable model – designed not just to succeed locally, but to scale. The systems, workflows and technology have been intentionally developed to support the launch and operation of future local media brands.
SoPublishing has delivered strong, consistent growth across audience, revenue and profitability – demonstrating the strength and scalability of its publishing model. SoGlos now has a monthly reach of 1.7 million across its website, email newsletters and social media channels, creating a powerful multi-platform audience ecosystem. This is complemented by a growing membership community of more than 30,000 registered users, strengthening direct relationships with audiences and deepening engagement with the brand. Engagement is exceptionally strong – with 81% of readers using SoGlos as their main or only source of Gloucestershire lifestyle and business information, and 92% likely to take action after reading.
Financially, the business has achieved its 19th consecutive year of profit, with margins of up to 35%. Commercial performance is driven by a highly recurring partnership model, with 82% of partners remaining with SoGlos for five to ten years – a strong indicator of trust, effectiveness and sustained value.
With a deeply engaged audience, proprietary technology and a proven operating model, SoPublishing is demonstrating how local media can be both sustainable and scalable – creating a blueprint for the next generation of local media brands.
