This Can Happen 2018

With over 750 attendees from some of the UK’s biggest businesses, the ’This Can Happen’ event which took place on 21 November 2018 in London, with a visit from HRH The Duke of Cambridge, was a great success.


Co-founders Jonny Benjamin MBE, Neil Laybourn and Zoe Sinclair of Employees Matter, an employee engagement specialist, founded the pioneering event to tackle mental health issues in the workplace and offer all delegates practical solutions


Neil Laybourn: “There is a real fear and lack of education around mental health. We don’t grow up talking about it, we simply don’t have the language to. Even if the will is there people ask ‘where do we start?’ This Can Happen will make great strides in raising awareness and encouraging understanding, support and empathy.” This Can Happen’s agenda was brimming with unique and fascinating content, with sessions hosted by international thought leaders.

This Can Happen sponsor Accenture will be sharing research that dispels the myth of the ‘1 in 4’, the widely quoted figure for the incidence of mental health challenges. Accenture’s research reveals that mental health is not, in fact, the minority issue the figure suggests. The proportion of people impacted by mental health challenges – either personally or through someone close to them – is in fact far higher.


The research also explores the impact that workplace culture can have on employee wellbeing, finding that where organisations create a supportive, open culture around mental health it can make a significant difference to their employees’ ability to thrive.


Barbara Harvey, Managing Director for Accenture Research and the lead for the company’s mental health programme in the UK will talk through the findings and explore how they can help us to reframe our approach to mental health at work.
