Google is proud to be associated with the AOP Digital Publishing Rising Star Award 2018.
In 2018, we celebrate our 20th Birthday.
From the very early days with a handful of like-minded people working from Susan Wojcicki’s garage in Silicon Valley, to the global organisation of 70,000+ we are today, our people have always been our most valuable asset. Over the past 20 years, commitment to developing people has remained central to our business. We’re also proud to invest in and help develop communities with shared values outside of our company, while supporting the News industry in the UK.
The Google News Initiative Fellowship offers those interested in journalism and technology the opportunity to gain a placement working at relevant organisations across the UK, to gain valuable experience and make lifelong contacts. While the work of each host organisation is unique - from the BBC to Trinity Mirror to Full Fact - each of the “Fellows” accepted onto the scheme has the opportunity to research and write stories, contribute to open source data programmes, and create timely data to accurately frame public debates about issues in the UK and the world.
The scheme has been running for 3 years in the UK and is helping to develop the next generation of journalists working to inform, engage, and inspire people around the world.
Also part of the News Initiative is the Google News Lab, a team whose mission is to collaborate with journalists and entrepreneurs to drive innovation in news. Offering partnerships and training in over 50 countries, the News Lab brings the best of Google technology to tackle important challenges in journalism today. Since launching in 2015, the Google News Lab team has trained 38 thousand journalists across Europe
The Rising Star in Digital Publishing Award ‘recognises the contribution that young talent makes to the profitable future of digital publishing and celebrates those individuals who are making a noticeable contribution to the growth of their business’. The nominated candidates have all demonstrated outstanding achievement in their organisations, through hard work, creative thinking, commercial instinct and other stand-out qualities.
But even more importantly, they are demonstrating the values of mission, transparency and voice that we strongly believe in at Google.
Congratulations to all of the nominees.
